Ski Loon Mountain, Michiganders Explore Boyne’s Beautiful Mountain out East

Mom in the Mitten & family take on Loon Mountain

Why Loon Mountain you ask? Well, first off our good friends from Florida always vacation there as he grew up in Massachusetts. Second, we purchased Boyne GOLD passes this year with the idea of meeting them at Loon. The GOLD pass gives you the ability to SKI FREE for 3 days at Loon, and if you have more time out East, this includes Sugar Loaf too which we heard great things about! We all love to ski together, so the Boyne GOLD pass made it a no brainer to go visit Loon Mountain.

This was my first time skiing outside of MICHiGAN so my brain was prepared for the longer runs but I don’t think my legs were.  As a beginner to intermediate skier I felt the BLUES and GREENS were equivalent to MICHiGAN BLUES and GREENS, it just takes 10 times longer to get to the bottom LOL! As a mom of 3 boys I would classify Loon as a very family friendly Mountain. They have ski school for kids & a beginner area if you need it. All the staff we encountered were super friendly and I always felt like we were safe. We even let middle mitten and his buddy ski alone for awhile because they didn’t want to stop, they basically shut down the  lifts.😊 The older boys, 9 & 11 were able to ski all the blues and a few blacks and explored some of the terrain parks with Mr.Mitten after Little Mitten and I called it a day. Let’s just say the boys are already planning our next trip back, they loved it!!

Convenience is everything when you’re skiing as a family and in my opinion I think the Mountain at Loon was laid out really well. We dropped our skis right next to the Kancamagus 8 lift and started our day there by the lodge. I could write a whole blog post on the Kancamagus 8 but lets just say its the Rolls Royce of chairlifts! Heated seats, and a bubble that comes down in bad weather, I mean this baby is nice…and FAST! The lodge consisted of a small cafeteria with lots seating on the main floor where you could drop your bags, a small store down below, and an Apres Bar (Babes) upstairs.

The 8 person lift takes you about 3/4 of the way up the mountain where you can access a variety of mostly blue runs.  After we rode the 8 person up a few times we took lower bear claw(green run) over to the Gondola(4 person) which takes you to the peak of the mountain.  The boys were pretty psyched to ride in the Gondola, as it was their first time. It’s the perfect opportunity to check in and see what everyone favorite run is so far and share some candy. We were hoping to grab a cocktail and a break at summit cafe but unfortunately they weren’t able to staff it this year due to covid, so we did the next best thing and skied down to Camp III Lodge.

Camp III Lodge had indoor seating as well as a huge outdoor deck with picnic tables & Adirondack chairs where you could have lunch, grab a drink and enjoy the view. Theres a little hill off the side where the kids can sled down on their butts and give mom and dad a chance to have one more beer. 😉Great Food (think clam chowder instead of chili), great atmosphere, and apparently part of what the locals call “The Trifecta” (Bunyan room, Camp III, & Babes) It was so warm out I could’ve just sat in one the Adirondack chairs all afternoon but the mountains were calling.

Unfortunately, due to some travel delays, we only got in one day of skiing in so we didn’t get a chance to explore the whole mountain and everything it has to offer but we did get to check out a few fun spots like Camp III & Babes. Due to the warm weather we were skiing in a lot of mashed potato type snow which made it difficult to push through especially coming from MICHiGAN where we’re used to packed down groomed trails but I’m not complaining, the SUN was AMAZING!

Overall, I give Loon Mountain 4 out of 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and that’s only because we didn’t have the best conditions, but hey, you can’t have it all. We flew in to Boston and it’s about a 2 hour drive north. Very similar to driving North to ski in Michigan. I highly recommend you check out Loon Mountain in Lincoln, New Hampshire. The views are incredible, the skiing is great, & the mountain amenities are top notch. Trust me, we will NEVER forget this trip!
